Giving Tuesday is Tuesday December 3, 2019. It is a national, event international, fundraising day that encourages donors from around the world to donate to nonprofit organizations. It is a response to consumer holidays like Black Friday and Cyber Monday that was started by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation. It is can be called Giving Tuesday or stylized with a hashtag, #GivingTuesday, to encourage use on social media platforms that use hashtags (especially Instagram and Twitter). Since it was started in 2012, it has grown to raise as much as $400 million in charitable giving in a single day!

It’s not too late to put together a #GivingTuesday strategy! Here are some tools to get you started, and… Save the Date!

How to Participate

Any organization can participate in Giving Tuesday and there is no need to “officially” join. However, be listed on the participating organizations page at GivingTuesday.org, the deadline for officially joining is Friday Nov. 22nd, 2019.

The Giving Tuesday Toolkit offers Case Studies, US national and country specific strategies as well as references a handful of #GivingTuesday strategies including a Facebook Match Program.

Voice

Using #GivingTuesday to amplify the voice for your nonprofit and mission! Ultimately, funds raised is only a method to your mission, and the social media component means it’a great platform to speak up!

Giving Tuesday is an activist response to what many identify as a systemic cultural issues – specifically the appropriation of traditional holidays for consumer ends at the expense of human welfare.

What is the mission, message and activism of your nonprofit? This is a great time to share it!

In-Kind Donations

Don’t just aim for cash. Many folks have other resources to share as well!

Volunteerism

Some folks may not want to just donate money or things, and ultimately, time, energy and social capital is worth much more! How can your nonprofit effectively enlist and support volunteer efforts on or around December 3rd?

Share Your Story Contest

GivingTuesday.org is also holding a contest where you share your story and they will choose 3 winners to win a 3rd place prize of $2500, 2nd place prize of $5000 or a 1st place prize of $10000 based on online votes.

“Tell us why you give! Submit a 150-1200 word essay (with a photo if possible) or a video (no more than 5 minutes) between Nov 1 – Dec 3, 2019.

Share on social media and encourage everyone you know to vote daily through Dec 10.
